War diary 1943-45
War diary of the German commander-in-chief in Denmark 1943-45
Below is a complete transcript of the war diary of tactical staff (Abteilung Ia) of the German commander-in-chief in Denmark (Wehrmachtbefehlshaber Dänemark) for the time 4th of November 1943 to 28th of Mai 1945.
The war diary was the staff diary of the German commander-in-chief, in which all important decisions and reports were written, day-by-day.
The war diary consists of two parts: 4.11.1943 - 31.12.1944 and 1.1.1945-28.5.1945, which are each numbered in succession. To the war diary also contains a large amount of documents as enclosure, which, however, are not shown here.
The source of the transcript is in the Rigsarkivet (National Archive) in Copenhagen. The diary is a typewritten manuscript, which clearly often has been typed day by day. Thus in several places there is a distinct difference in the inking of the letters, which shows that at least two different typewriters have been in use. The typewriters used were probably bought in Denmark, as the German "ß" is not used in the diary.
Addition and corrections in handwriting are marked with square bracket [].
The original spelling has been kept. A few personal names has, however, been corrected in square bracket [].
Although the war diary seems complete, there are some problems with the numbering of the pages: - In the war diary of 1943-44 page number "2" has been used twice. The pages 137, 161-162, 167 and 198 are not found. However, in the context the pages doesn't seem to be lacking. - In the war diary of 1945 page 170 is not found.
The original can be found in the Rigsarkivet in Copenhagen. Signature: Håndskriftssamlingen XVI, box 200-201. Copy: Bundesarchiv, RW 38/182 - 185
